Özlem Bulut is a singer, soprano and composer whose artistic language moves between classical vocal music, jazz, Anatolian musical traditions and contemporary songwriting. With an exceptionally versatile voice, she combines the technical precision and expressive power of classical vocal training with the freedom of jazz, improvisation and the emotional immediacy of Anatolian music.

Growing up within a Kurdish-Alevi cultural tradition in Anatolia, Özlem Bulut was exposed from an early age to the rich and diverse musical heritage of the region. The bağlama and traditional Anatolian music were part of her childhood, long before she turned towards classical music and opera. These roots remain an important part of her artistic identity to this day.

Her musical journey led her from traditional music to classical vocal training and eventually to major European opera stages. She studied at the Conservatory of Mersin and later at Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul. Through an Erasmus scholarship, she came to Vienna, where she continued her studies in opera singing and completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

As a classical singer, she has performed at renowned European opera houses and institutions, including the Vienna Volksoper, the Vienna State Opera and the Opéra Bastille in Paris. Her experience as a classically trained soprano remains an essential foundation of her artistic work, while at the same time she has continuously explored forms of musical expression beyond the boundaries of classical music.

In 2008, she founded the Özlem Bulut Band together with composer and pianist Marco Annau. Starting from Anatolian melodies and rhythms, they developed a distinctive musical language in which jazz, soul, pop and improvisation meet the musical heritage of her roots. From the beginning, the aim was not simply to juxtapose “East” and “West”, but to explore new forms of musical dialogue.

With her various projects, Özlem Bulut has performed at numerous renowned venues and festivals in Austria and internationally, including the Donauinselfest, Popfest Wien, Wiener Konzerthaus, Porgy & Bess, ORF RadioKulturhaus and Jazzfestival Saalfelden. Her international concert tours have taken her to France, England, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Germany, Turkey and South Africa.

With Baroque Arabesque, she explores another facet of her musical identity, bringing together her classical background with Baroque music, Middle Eastern traditions and Sephardic repertoire.

In recent years, Özlem Bulut has increasingly expanded her work towards larger interdisciplinary and classical projects. In 2025, she performed with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz in Mannheim in a programme dedicated to the music of Zülfü Livaneli. In September 2026, she will appear at the Konzerthaus Berlin, in the project Aşina – Hommage an Zülfü Livaneli.
Özlem Bulut does not understand musical identity as something fixed. Her music moves between Anatolia and Europe, between the opera stage and the jazz club, between tradition and the present. Her work speaks of heritage, memory, love, freedom, social questions and the experience of living between different cultural spaces.

Rather than simply highlighting the boundaries between cultures, she is interested in the space in between – a place where different musical experiences enter into dialogue and something new can emerge.

Her music is rooted without being backward-looking. It is open without losing its connection to where it comes from. And it is deeply personal without being confined to a single cultural or musical identity.

Özlem Bulut represents a contemporary approach to vocal music in which classical tradition, jazz, Anatolian heritage and original composition come together to form a distinctive artistic voice.
